Consumer magazine circulation figures for the first half of 2012 (ABC)
- Slimming World Magazine : 420,011 - % change y/y: 20.2 - Sold copies: 420,009
- Magazines such as slimming world magazine seem to have raised in sales year to year, as seen above, slimming world went up by over 20% last year. This may be because people are starting to become more conscious of their health and can now afford to start these types of weight loss schemes.
- BBC Top Gear Magazine : 155,017 - % change y/y: -18.6 - Sold copies: 140,364
- Luxury magazines such as Top Gear Magazine have gone down in terms of sale year-to-year. This is probably because of the fact that magazines such as this are simply and addition to the television programme that they will already be able to view for free. In times where people are trying to save money, they will be less likely to buy magazines such as this as they are not needed for any specific reason.
These results, along with others in the chart of best selling magazines, show that in terms of circulation there is a pattern in which style of magazine is increasing circulation recently and which styles are decreasing circulation. This means that due to economic circumstances and also the influence of popular culture, there are things that are currently more popular and therefore will manage to distribute much larger quantities. In the example above we see that whilst slimming techniques and schemes are becoming more popular, car reviews and news magazines are decreasing in sales since last year.
In terms of the magazine I am going to be making, this shows that I will have to either create some sort of unique selling point in order to appeal to a certain demographic that will be attracted to that aspect of my magazine, or I will have include references to popular culture and things that may appeal to a much wider demographic.
