For my first blog post I have gotten two examples of existing school magazines in order to deconstruct them and hopefully get some ideas on how I can make a good school magazine for myself.
First of all, out of two I have chosen, the Prep School magazine is the better one in my opinion. Overall it is a better quality in terms of the image used and the layout of all the information. Unlike the Magellan High magazine it seems to be a lot less cluttered, with there only being a small amount of text on the page at the bottom. The Magellan High magazine, despite not having too much information, has a very large font size which means that it takes a lot more space up on the page.
The image used for the Magellan High magazine is relevant in terms of representing the school as a whole, however the image used in the Prep School magazine appears to be more relevant to the topic of that issue of the magazine, both images used are good for a school magazine, they simply represent different aspects of school life.
For the Magellan High magazine it appears the the girl on the front has been cropped and added in to the background image, rather than being in the original image. This gives a strange look to the overall image as it distracts the reader from the rest of the information on the cover. Despite the seemingly good job that has been done editing this image, it is still a strange image to look at, and overall makes the magazine look rather unprofessional.
The font scheme used in the Prep School magazine is also more consistent than the Magellan High font scheme. Where Prep School uses only one style of font, excluding the logo, Magellan High uses multiple different fonts. The consistency on the Prep School font makes it seem more professional as it shows that thought has been put in to the design of the front cover. Whereas Magellan High appears to have simply chosen man different fonts in order to try and stand out, making it look a little bit messy.

This is really good Liam! Good analysis, lots about font, maybe look at other aspects in more depth.
ReplyDeleteGood work, could go more in depth!
